Ukrainian Railways ChS4-076 Electric Locomotive

On 24 February, 2022 when war came to Ukraine, millions were trapped in the areas under attack. Commercial flights were halted and many people did not have the means to evacuate on their own. Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ), the Ukrainian Railways, emerged as the unexpected savior, and the only functioning transport system operating at the time.

In the first months of the war, UZ transported more than four million people to safety across Ukraine’s borders. Most of them were women and children. UZ workers took to living at the train stations in order to keep the system functioning. Countless lives were saved as a result of UZ’s actions.

UZ Fast Facts:
- UZ gauge is 1,520 mm (4 ft 11+27⁄32 in). This gauge is only used in Ukraine, Finland, Belarus, Russia, and Moldova. There is a break-of-gauge necessitating change of trains when UZ enters neighboring countries such as Poland and Romania.

- UZ has 23,000 km of tracks in country (13th largest in the world), and approximately 1400 railway stations in the country

- UZ employs about 400,000 people. It is the only train operator in Ukraine, and is owned by the government (Ministry of Infrastructure)
